The Wales Accord on the Sharing of Personal Information

The Wales Accord on the Sharing of Personal Information (WASPI) provides a framework for service-providing organisations directly concerned with the health, education, safety, crime prevention and social well being of people in Wales. In particular, it concerns those organisations that hold information about individuals and who may consider it appropriate or necessary to share that information with others in a lawful and intelligent way.

The WASPI framework is recognised as one of the key elements of the Welsh Government's Sharing Personal Information programme and facilitates this by establishing agreed requirements and mechanisms for the exchange of personal information between different partner organisations; including public sector, voluntary sector and private and independent organisations. There is no restriction limitation as to the organisations that can sign up to and use the WASPI framework.

The WASPI framework complies with the Information Commissioner’s 'Data Sharing Code of Practice' and ensures compliance with legislative requirements and national and international standards and policies.

In 2010 WASPI received endorsement by the Welsh Government as the ‘single’ information sharing framework for Wales.  Version 3 is available for use by all service providing organisations, who wish to show their commitment in meeting agreed standards for the sharing of personal information.

Although originating in Wales, the WASPI framework can easily transfer across to non-Welsh information sharing partner organisations, as the concept of principles and delivery will fit most situations.
